The Digicel Vanuatu National team has completed its' preparation for the upcoming ICC East-Asia Pacific Division 1 event in Port Moresby, PNG with some solid performances in Queensland.

The team has spent the last week in Australia based on the Sunshine Coast where the team played three warm-up games against local representative teams including a number of players that have represented their state.

The Vanuatu team remained undefeated winning the first two games before the third game was called off due to bad weather despite Vanuatu well on the way to victory.

The first game saw Vanuatu set a formidable total with Lazaro Carlot setting a solid foundation opening the innings with 40 before some late big hitting by Patrick Matautaava clearing the boundary four times in his innings of 55 from only 40 balls to set a total of 8/156.

Vanuatu then restricted the opposition to 7/137 with only former state player Rod Davidson offering any resistance with a well-made 50. Simpson Obed was the best of the bowlers taking 2/29 off his five overs.

The second game saw a great bowling and fielding display from Vanuatu to bowl the opposition out for 100. Vanuatu kept the pressure on the opposition throughout the innings with tight bowling and excellent fielding which included two sensational run-outs from direct hits. Simpson Obed was again the pick of the bowlers taking 3/16 from his five overs with great support from Manu Nimiho who took 2/8 off 4.2 overs.

Vanuatu started well with the bat with openers Lazaro Carlot and Lenika Natapei getting off to a flying start before a middle order collapse left Vanuatu in some trouble. The elder statesmen of the team Eddy Mansale and Manu Nimiho were able to guide the team to victory and pass the total with two wickets in hand.

The team then took some time out of their busy schedule to assist a group of aspiring cricketers partaking in a school holiday cricket camp. All the players entertained the young players taking them through a number of skills sessions much to the delight of all participants. Renowned cricket coach Brad Murphy who organised the clinics commented

"All the boys were absolutely fantastic and all got involved and really made a positive impact to all the participants and made some lifelong fans. It was a great pleasure to work with the team and they are truly a credit to and a great advertisement for Vanuatu Cricket."

The final game saw another impressive bowling and fielding performance bowling the opposition out for only 96 runs. Fast bowlers Patrick Matautaava and Kenny Tari both took three wickets.

Vanuatu were well on their way to another victory at 4/55 thanks to another great start from Lazaro Carlot making a quick fire 39 at the top of the order.

The team now travels to PNG for the opening of the tournament on 4th July against hosts and favourites PNG. Captain Andrew Mansale is also very excited about the teams prospects.

"We have a very young team but the team has done very well in the warm up games in Australia. We received some positive feedback from our opposition on the Sunshine Coast and we are definitely ready. I’m quietly confident we will do well in PNG," Mansale stated.

The other teams joining hosts PNG and Vanuatu are Japan, Samoa and Fiji. The winner of the tournament will progress to the 20/20 World Cup Qualifying tournament in Dubai later in the year.
