The upcoming Kumbh Mela at Ujjain might provide a major boost to virtual reality in India. Twist Mobile has introduced its Mahakumbh Cardboard headset to provide 360-degree immersive videos of the religious event, which will take place between April 22 and May 21.
The firm will set up 5000 units of Mahakumbh Cardboard headsets at shops in Ujjain to provide an immersive experience to pilgrims of the famous Mahakal temple. The mobile app called 'TMVR- VR of India' is available for free on Google Play. Android smartphone users who have got VR headsets can download the app to experience it from anywhere in India. This app should work fine with Google Cardboard as well.
"At the Kumbh Mela, all pilgrims would want to see the Mahakaal temple and witness Bhasam Aarti in it. However, only 150 people per day are allowed during the Bhasam Aarti. While TVs will be installed across Kumbh Mela, they are not capable of providing an immersive experience," said the company in a statement. Simhastha 2016 at Ujjain is expected to host 70 Million pilgrims over 30 days.
TMVR team has worked with Madhya Pradesh Tourism, Nestle and Culture Machine on virtual reality previously.
"Ujjain government was very supportive in this project, as sponsorship is very difficult for this type of initiatives. Achal Choudhary, Chairman, IPS Academy helped us with sponsorships and more. Virtual Reality is our core vision. We want to use technology for purpose of spreading and preserving our culture, traditions and history," it said.
The app will look forward to create Aarti, songs, hyms, Sholak and all Indian rituals and tradition in virtual reality.
