In a T-Hub event in Hyderabad, Uber has announced the launch of its bike-sharing service, called uberMOTO. The service gives riders an additional option other than cab service, which is much more affordable and convenient. Essentially, instead of cabs, the uberMOTO helps riders summon motorcycle rides at the push of a button, through the Uber app. Riders receive driver and bike details just as they do for other Uber rides, as well as all standard safety features before, during and after the ride including GPS tracking, two-way feedback and the ability to share trip details with family and friends. uberMOTO will go live in Hyderabad from January 2017, and will be one of the most affordable transportation options in the city, with fares as low as Rs 20 for the first 3 kms and Rs 5 per km thereafter.
“I am excited to be in Hyderabad for the launch of uberMOTO. It’s a quick, easy and affordable way to get around the city. And it’s great to be working with a progressive, forward thinking government like Telangana on smart mobility solutions that can help reduce congestion in urban areas,” said Travis Kalanick, founder and CEO of Uber .
“We recently achieved the top spot in ease of doing business in India which is a testament to our strong belief in making Telangana a startup leader in India. Uber has added another feather in our partnership today by launching UberMOTO to help solve the transportation and congestion problems for people in Hyderabad and I am hopeful that this service will help people in reaching their destination quickly and conveniently,” added KT Rama Rao, Telangana Cabinet Minister for IT E&C, MAUD, Industries & Commerce.
In addition to UberMOTO, Uber and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited have also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to help extend the reach of the bike sharing service. Amit Jain, the President of India and South Asia, Uber India, said “The government of Telangana has once again shown its commitment to embracing technology-enabled solutions. By recognizing how we can transform urban mobility options in our cities through progressive regulations, Telangana is leading the way in bringing the change that our cities need.”
In order to book a motorcycle ride, users would first of course need to download the Uber app if they do not already have it. For riders in Hyderabad, along with UberGO, UberX and others, from January 2017, they will also see an uberMOTO ride option. Select uberMOTO in the app, enter the pickup location and payment method, and request a ride; receive driver details, details of the motorbike.
For safety purpose, uberMOTO drivers will have one helmet for the rider, and all riders and drivers must wear a helmet, as per the law. At the end of the trip, riders can pay by cash, credit/debit card or mobile wallet and receive an electronic receipt via the Uber app.
