Finally Direct Messages on Twitter are undergoing a big change. Earlier to send someone a direct message on the social media site, you both needed to follow each other and only then you could exchange messages.

Now Twitter says they are introducing a new setting which will allow users to receive Direct Message from anyone, even if you are not following them.

Twitter has also introduced a new Direct Message button on profile pages on Android and iPhone, which shows profiles of people you can send Direct Messages to.

To allow anyone to send a Direct Message, you need to go to your Privacy and Security settings in your Twitter settings and then click on allow on ‘Receive direct messages from anyone’.

You can also click an option to make sure people can’t add you to groups, thus avoiding Group Messages with people you might not be following and might not care for. You should note that enabling ‘Receive Messages from anyone’ doesn’t mean you’ll be able to send message to everyone.

If a user, who doesn’t follow you hasn’t enabled this setting, then you won’t able to send messages to them.
