Truecaller , the mobile communication application with services in caller ID, spam detection and dialer functionalities, will soon roll out an Emergency SOS service targeted towards women security in India, even as it plans to make its services available to non-smartphone users, the company’s CSO and co-founder Nami Zarringhalam told ET.

“We have built a product that we intend to launch soon. It is targeted towards women, and is built within Truecaller. It's important that it works spotless and we really aim to not only make you feel secure but be able help you in such situations where you need to have access to people and send distress signals,” Zarringhalam said.

The Indian government wants all mobile handsets sold in India from January 2017 to feature a panic button that will allow women in distress to seek help. This is part of a string of measures announced by the Modi government to ensure safety of women. A few handset vendors have already added panic button or SOS option in some of their smartphones in India.

The Stockholm-based company expects its user base to grow quickly after the roll out in India. “There's been a lot of smartphone sale happening in India and one of the areas is the value that needs to improve for women,” he said, adding that the company is hoping to see more people adopting not only its app but other such apps available.

Truecaller, which has over 130 million users in India, is also working on making its caller ID and spam detection service available to a wider range of users than just smartphone users.

Asked if the company is aiming to target the
feature phone segment, Zarringhalam said, “That's something we are definitely working on… as we grow and trust grows in communications, it becomes important for to not just tap 20-30% of the market, but we need to look beyond that.”

“India has always been our largest market and it continues to be. We have been exploring different opportunities to grow and move into other adjacent areas. I the coming weeks we will be doing some more announcements,” he said.

Truecaller app is currently available for 12 different languages. Zarringhalam said that the company will continue to push out more of these languages. “It’s a core piece of making Truecaller available for everyone.”

The application has over 250 million users globally with user base increased by more than 300% over the past 12 months. The company claims that Truecaller helps identify more than 900 million calls a month, and identify 120 million spam calls a month.

The company is actively looking at native integration of Truecaller app with smartphones, having already launched devices with Truecaller as default dialer in Intex and Blu smartphones. “With native integration, the experience is really powerful,” Zarringhalam said, confirming talks with China’s OnePlus for native integration of Truecaller app.

Besides, the company is already working with around 20 original equipment vendors for various different types of app integrations.
Truecaller has launched its monetisation efforts in early 2016, and its currently generating revenue through its ad platform. “It has been growing with us. Currently it's only our ad platform, which we built ourselves and are partnering with different players to make sure we deliver mass scale,” Zarringhalam said.
