“Carriage of TV programming has been licensed out to registered broadcasters who are then allowed to give the content to cable operators or satellite players, under a licensing framework. If a third party, like an app, is showing the same channels without paying carriage charges and licence fee, it creates disparity,” said a senior official who did not want to be identified.

“Either both should be under the ambit of the licence, or both should be exempted,” the official added. Trai may issue a consultation paper on the matter by July-August.

Trai :angry2: :wall: Now more channels will shutdown ..
By next year we'll only have like 100 channels left. English movies and gec will shut down. So will most infotainment, lifestyle, music and news channel.

Then we will prepare to pay 20% extra (ISP/DPO commission) for streaming apps!
Finally all TRAI rules only benefits Service Provider!
Its a Jio's gimmick!

How this rule will help jio I think it affects all including service provider
Whenever Jio enters in any service, then TRAI rules changed. First in mobie, Call Termination charges were decreased, Then Jio acquires in Cable TV, rules have been changed as NTO, finally when Fibernet starts (commercial launch), these streaming app rules will change!

The broadcasting licence in India is valid for 10 years, and it must comply with the programming and advertising code under the cable TV (regulation) Act. The channels must adhere to guidelines set by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. However, the apps are not licensed but are governed by the IT Act.

A senior official said, "Carriage of TV programming has been licensed out to registered broadcasters who are then allowed to give the content to cable operators or satellite players, under a licensing framework. If a third party, like an app, is showing the same channels without paying carriage charges and licence fee, it creates disparity," reports Economic Times. "Either both should be under the ambit of the licence, or both should be exempted," he added.

TRAI is likely to issue a consultation paper on the regulation by July-August this year.
