NEW DELHI: Country’s largest telco Bharti Airtel believes that the Indian telecom landscape needs financially capable companies and the highly-competitive market would be left with only with four to five service providers in next two years as consolidation creeps in.
“Industry need companies which have financial scale to pick spectrum and make investments. We had 10 players. Now, there will be four to five players over the period of next two years,” Bharti Airtel chief executive— South Asia & India Gopal Vittal told ETTelecom.
Airtel’s top executive feels that the telecom sector is heading for a mega consolidation exercise with some recent merger and acquisition (M&A) initiatives.
“Idea and Vodafone have announced merger. We too have signed a definite agreement with Telenor. Reliance Communications is in talks with Aircel,” Vittal added.
