Tata Motors yesterday reported its May sales figures. Tata Motors sales have increased by ten per cent to 62,296 units. The Tata Nano was pivotal in the increased sales.
Despite this the firm's passenger car sales saw a decline of 15per cent. Tata Nano sales surged 84 per cent to 6,515 units. However sales of the Tata Indica and Indigo families plunged in to the red. Indica sales dropped 35 per cent to 5,497 units while Tata Motors could only sell 4,268 units of the Indigo marking a decline of 35 per cent. Sales of Tata Motors larger models – the Sumo and the Aria improved in May. The company sold a combined 3,121 units registering a 15 per cent increase.
Sales of Tata Motors' commercial vehicles rose by 19 per cent in May to 37,361 units. Light commercial vehicle sales increased by 24 per cent while medium and heavy commercial vehicles contributed a 12 per cent hike in sales.
Tata Motors' exports continued to improve. Exports rose 39 per cent to 5,534 units in May. It recently began exporting the Tata Nano to Sri Lanka. There have been reports about Tata Nano could be soon exported to Nepal. The Tata Nano's improved sales should encourage the Indian carmaker as the small car's initial sales last year were not encouraging. The recent petrol price hike has made Indian consumers prefer the low cost Nano over more expensive vehicles.
