Speaking in the Legislative Assembly today, Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan said that steps will be taken to provide internet facilities to households at a low monthly fee through the Tamil Nadu Information Technology Department.

Accordingly, he has announced that he will provide internet facility with a speed of 100 Mbps to homes at a monthly fee of Rs. 200. He further stated that applications have been received from 4,700 village panchayats requesting internet facility and said that the places where appropriate facilities are available for those villages will be considered and appropriate action will be taken.

This scheme will benefit villages and local cable operators would involve in this process. This is similar to how BSNL is offering connections in villages. Meanwhile Airtel and Jio have already started offering Airfibre in villages. Airtel and Jio may not invest in FTTH technologies for villages

This is not a brand new scheme if you (TN) guys remember. This was originally announced in 2016 during Amma's reign, along with the "Amma Wifi Zone" scheme. TACTV also received a ISP Class B license at that time, from the Telecom ministry. It was only on paper since then.

Now they have revived the scheme and announced it again. I hope at least this time it will see sunlight.

If it is implemented, we can get a benifit of low tariff from other ISP as well. In rural areas, most of the places TANFINET cable laying work is completed last year itself. There is a high chance that this scheme can easily be made available to rural areas. Hope Bharath Net scheme helping the state government.
