Supreme Court allows treat of free telecast of Indo-Pak Match on Doordarshan
Whenever India and Pakistan clash on the field of cricket, it not only becomes a matter of pride for people of both these nations but it also attracts a lot of media attention from all over the world.
It seems that even the Supreme Court judges’ couldn’t deny the pleasure of watching an Indo-Pak encounter to the general public of India as it has allowed Doordarshan to telecast this much awaited encounter. This step would allow millions of Indians to watch this memorable clash free of cost.
It should be added that Supreme Court Tuesday stayed the Delhi High Court judgement that barred public broadcaster Doordarshan from sharing the live feed of any cricket match with the cable operators. As per High Court’s judgement the live feed of the matches were only provided to cable orders by ESPN and Star TV which hold exclusive telecasting rights for all matches of the World Cup.
High Court passed this order only after the incident in which the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India, ESPN and Star had contended that cable TV operators were getting live feeds through DD channels free of cost, which led to loss of revenue for them.
Unfortunately the fate of other matches has not been decided yet as the apex court bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that the Delhi High Court judgement will remain stayed till the next hearing. The next hearing is due on 17 Feb 2015.
Senior counsel P. Chidambaram who was represeting Star TV told the court that after seven long years the high court passed an order in his clients favour and his clients expected the balance of equity to remain in their favour so that the cricket matches are not aired on television freely. He also added that his client has several proposals for consideration by the court.
We can only hope that the Supreme Court would seek a way out to allow other matches to be aired on Doordarshan as well so that the common people who don’t have enough money to enjoy the game via DTH can also enjoy the World Cup. After all, one shouldn’t need money to watch a game that is related to the hearts of the entire nation.
