Former India spinner Sunil Joshi has been named as chief coach of the Assam Ranji Trophy team for the next two seasons.
The former Karnataka cricketer, who previously coached Jammu & Kashmir and Hyderabad, will replace statemate Sanath Kumar.
"Assam proved that they are one of the tough teams by progressing to the Ranji Trophy semifinals last season. They have a great bowling unit while the batsmen need to contribute enough to complement their bowlers. My aim is to help them continue the good work," said Joshi, who worked as a spin coach with Oman national team for the 2016 T20 WC.
With the upcoming Ranji Trophy being played in neutral venues, Joshi, a veteran of 69 ODIs and 13 Tests, felt the new format will help players improve their skills.
"When players are exposed to unfamiliar conditions they will look to improve their overall skills to excel in challenging conditions. It is one of the best initiatives by BCCI but they should persist with it for a minimum of three years to get results." Joshi finished a stellar domestic career with a record 489 first-class wickets.
