NEW DELHI: Sports minister Ajay Maken announced the new cash reward for the Indian hockey players of Rs 1.5 lakh each for winning the Asian Champions Trophy after players rejected the earlier reward of Rs 25,000 offered by Hockey India.
Earlier in the day, the Asian Champion Indian hockey team got upset over the prize money given to them by Hockey India as skipper Rajpal Singh refused to accept the cash prize of Rs 25,000.
However, Maken clarified by saying that the Rs 25,000 offered to each player for winning Asian Champions Trophy was not announced by government but by Hockey India.
India won the Asian Champions Trophy after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 4-2 via penalty strokes in the summit clash on Sunday.
Criticising Hockey India for the unacceptable gesture, skipper of the victorious Indian team, Rajpal Singh said if the federation does not reward players properly then how would they expect youngsters to take up the sport in future.
"If there are no incentives how can we expect the younger generation to take the sport," said Rajpal.
"Despite problems if we are giving our 100 per cent, then the federation needs to think of suitably rewarding players.
"We did not ask for any rewards, we play for our country and will keep on doing so," the captain added.
Arjun Hallapa, who was ruled out of the Asian Champions Trophy due to an injury, expressed surprise at HI's gesture, saying that players need to be rewarded very well.
