Sony has set up ForwardWorks, a new company whose focus will be to make "full-fledged game titles" for smart devices that "will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation dedicated software titles".

No word has been given on when the first of these projects could appear - the company has yet to even be incorporated. Sony's announcement indicates that ForwardWorks is currently solely focused on making games for the Japanese and Asian markets, with no mention of expanding into western territories.

It follows Nintendo's recent move into the smartphone market, with Miitomo - the first of five specially-designed free apps co-developed with DeNA - hitting a million Japanese users this week.

However, where Nintendo's apps are designed to drive users to purchase Nintendo hardware and raise brand awareness, Sony's "full-fledged" games look to be a more straight gaming experience.

Sony's last phone-focused move was PlayStation Mobile, which was closed down last year
