Sony India has expanded its range of X series with the launch of two new 4K Bravia Ultra High Definition (HD) television sets. After launching the 84-inch 4K LED TV last year, on Tuesday Sony introduced the 65-inch and 55-inch screen sizes at “competitive” prices. The company said with India becoming its fourth largest market last year, it was an important market for future growth. The 4K TV sets in 65 inches and 55 inches screen sizes are priced at Rs 4,04,900 and Rs 3,04,900, respectively.

The series offers four times more detail than a full HD television set, the company said. Kenichiro Hibi, Managing Director, Sony India, said after establishing market leadership in flat panel televisions, the company aimed to further strengthen its position with the new launch as well as other series announced this year.

“Bravia is the largest category contributor toward overall sales of Sony India and contributed 35 per cent towards the company sales in FY12. With this launch, we are targeting a bigger market for 4K TVs by introducing the technology at a very strategic price-point. We will be increasing our Bravia marketing budget to Rs 250 crore and channel counters to 7,000 in FY13,” he added.

Sony to launch 20 TV models, chase No.1 slot

The 65-inch 4K TV sells for Rs 4 lakh and the 55-inch model for Rs 3 lakh. Is Sony’s strategy gearing towards premium products only?

Yes, we would like to position ourselves as a premium brand. Even in our entry products, we like to put some premium, because we provide more value compared to just a conventional entry product.

Sony India has 30% market share by volume in the TV segment. How do you plan to enhance that?

We want the No.1 position. This year, we’re launching 20 new models so that we can cultivatemarkets all across India.

Which is your fastest-growing segment in the country?

Our fastest-growing sector is mobile phones because India is one ofbiggest markets in the world. But sustainable growth can be seen in the TV market as well. This year, we are trying to sell minimum 13 lakh TV sets.

How is your smartphone strategy shaping up in India?

Earlier we used to be Sony Ericsson. Last year, we bought 100% shares and our mobile business became part of Sony India. We are planning to utilise all of Sony’s heritage in selling our phones. Our new mobile phones integrate technology from our TVs, our camera technology where we are No.1 in the world and our audio technology.

You have increased the Bravia marketing budget to Rs 250 crore. Where would it be invested?

We will spend in two areas. First, we plan to maximise our exposure through the media this year – online, magazine, TV, newspapers. Second, when people come into our shops, we want to nicely convey the message to the customers; so, we are training our promoters and spending money on enhancing our display to showcase the beauty of our products. We are also setting up 7,000 channel counters.

PC sales have been hit all over the world. How has the Vaio been affected?

The entry segment PC is to a certain extent replaced by mobile phones.

However, in the Rs 30,000-40,000 and upwards bench, there is still a sustainable market. So, we’ll focus on those areas.

What about the tablet market? Is Sony India looking at that?

Tablet is also growing and we are introducing some new models, but we are not a major player.

Do you have any plans to set up manufacturing in India now that the country is poised to become one of the fastest-growing consumer market in the world?

In the TV segment, majority of our products are coming from Malaysia. We don’t have any manufacturing plant in India. However, we’ve a software R&D centre in Bangalore with 1,500 people. They are developing application software which is integrated into the devices. That is an intangible asset that we are developing.

When is the PlayStation 4 launching in India?

We are planning to launch that around the year-end.
