The countdown to the New Year has officially begun and Christmas is just around the corner, basically, we are all right now in one of the most joyous 10 days of the year. And it’s not just you and me, but the biggest tech companies are also participating in wrapping joys and spreading smiles. Social media platforms have been full fledgedly participating in the merry making.

Along with a bunch of filters dedicated to Christmas, Snapchat has launched a fun little game on the app. At the time of writing the story, the Snapchat in-app game was the first in the list of filters. Called the Santa’s Helper, the game is a really simple one, with just an option to maneuver the Santa’s helper to left and right, but oh boy it is fun. Do note, that you would need filter facial recognition on either the front or the rear camera for the game to work.

Essentially, as the name suggests, you are the Santa’s Helper, which is an elf. So when you activate your Snapchat’s filters (with the front camera on, tap on your face to activate the filters), the first one is the game. Once the filter recognizes your face, the game activate. Like we mentioned earlier, it’s a very basic game and all you can do is move the elf (which is you) left and right by tilting your handset on either of the directions (which is actually quite confusing, but we’ll come back to that in a bit).

The aim of the game is to basically collect all the gifts and candies, and save yourself from the trees and the hopping bunnies. Every time you take a gift or a candy, a point adds, and each time you run into a tree or ram into a bunny, a point is deducted. You can click pictures and record your game, like you record a video in any other filter and share it with your friends, or you can just play the game without recording it. Kind of works as a standalone game as well.

Now, coming back to the confusing navigation part of the game, basically, tilting your phone to the right moves the elf to the left, and tilting the handset to the left moves the elf to the right. So, it basically takes a while for you to get used to that. But the game is quite addictive, and I suggest you go play it right away before Snapchat removes the filter.

Other that the game, Snapchat has a bunch of other filters as well, that are themed around the festive season. I tried a few of them.

Besides Snapchat, just in time for the festive season, Facebook too launched a new camera with art and special effects in its Messenger app. Although the filters on the Messenger camera app are much slower as compared to Snapchat, they take a while to download, but they are quite fun, with a handful of Christmasy filters.

Google too stepped in the festivity with its animated Google Doodle today. Today’s doodle designed by Gerben Steenks shows the letters in the word Google grooving and singing ‘ Tis the season Christmas carols. Google is known to release new doodles everyday till the actual Christmas day, and this year shouldn’t be any different.

Earlier this month, Google also released the Santa tracker you can send your friends a call from Santa, track Santa’s gift distributing journey on a map, or play Reindeer racing games on the Santa Village home page.

Therefore, here’s hoping the festivities never end. Keep spreading joy and keep your spirits high. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
