The integration will help Skype Lite users identify the genuineness of the persons on either ends of the call.
Both the persons can verify their identities at the beginning of the video call by requesting Aadhaar verification. To confirm their identity, the user has to click on “Verify Aadhaar identity”, enter their Aadhaar number. They will be asked to authenticate with a one-time password (OTP). Once validated, they can choose to share the Aadhaar information with the other person to confirm their identity.

Microsoft, which owns Skype and Skype Lite, says it will not store the Aadhaar details.

Microsoft India has announced that their video calling app - Skype Lite will now support Aadhaar integration. Built specifically for the Indian market, Skype Lite was launched back in February this year at Future Decoded India. Microsoft had let known at the time that the Aadhaar integration within Microsoft’s fastest and smallest app to date will be made available, starting summer 2017.

Through the Aadhaar integration, Skype Lite users can verify each other’s identity online. This is aimed at increasing security while communicating over the app. Skype Lite now allows either party to request for an Aadhaar verification over a video call. Users can click on ‘Verify Aadhaar Identity’ to enter their 12-digit Aadhaar number. This can then be authenticated with an OTP sent to the user via SMS. After validation, users can choose to share pre-selected Aadhaar information with the other user as a confirmation to their identity.
