In another move suggestive of growing cooperation between domestic T20 teams around the world development squad teams from Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder and Lahore Qalanders will compete in a four match tri-series in November as preparation for the upcoming Big Bash League season which begins on December 20.
Earlier this year, on the back of Paddy Upton's position as head coach of the Thunder and Qalanders, a deal was signed between the two teams formally establishing a relationship that was expected to lead to exchanging of facilities, coaching staff and academy players. The organisation of these matches is the first manifestation of that.
The matches will largely feature academy and development players but represent a further tightening of relationships between T20 teams from different leagues, coming just one day after the Melbourne Stars announced a partnership with their male and female counterparts in Wellington. Dom Redmond, the General Manger of the Sydney Sixers, said the tri-series was "a great opportunity for our academy players to compete against international talent".
The inclusion of Sydney Sixers in the deal is consistent with a strong working relationship between the two Sydney BBL teams, something encouraged by the tournament's management and last season saw the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup staged as a talent hunt for both teams featuring clubs from their respective regions of Sydney.
Both teams will also play pre-season warm-up matches against a Bangladesh Board XI and Hong Kong, while the Thunder will play Melbourne Stars and Canterbury Kings and the Sixers will play their academy team.
