Silk Road 2 hacked, drained of $2.7M in bitcoins

MADRID (MarketWatch) -- Hackers drained an entire bitcoin wallet belonging to Silk Road 2, which was launched in October after the Federal Bureau of Investigation closed down the original Silk Road site, media reports said late Thursday.

Hackers stole 4,474.27 bitcoins, worth $2.7 million, which emptied out the site's escrow account. Using the same bug that has hit several exchanges, such as Mt. Gox , hackers exploited a transaction- malleability bug by using a denial-of-service attack.

The administrator of Silk Road 2, known as Defcon on Reddit, admitted he was slow to respond to the attacks on other sites.

The original Silk Road marketplace allegedly allowed users to buy and sell unlawful goods and services anonymously.

On Mt. Gox, bitcoin prices fell to $399.39 on Friday from a level of over $400 on Thursday.

The bitcoin price on Coindesk.com's exchange was last down 3.2% to $579.24.
