Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 has a competition. Right on cue, Sharp has launched its much-awaited bezel-less smartphone called Aquos S2. The smartphone has been crafted with a metal frame and a glossy finish. While the near bezel-less display is the highlight, the dual-camera setup at the back also qualifies as the USP. The Sharp Aquos S2 will be available in black, white, blue, and mint blue color options. It is priced at 2499 Yuan (approximately Rs 23,800) for the 64GB storage model, while the high-end variant costs 3499 Yuan (approximately Rs 33,300). The smartphone will go on sale starting August 14 via JD.com. There is no word if the smartphone will launch in India.

Apart from the bezel-less display, the dual-camera system is the talking point of the Sharp Aquos S2. It is equipped with a 12-megapixel primary lens along with an 8-megapixel secondary lens for capturing depth information, which helps achieve the DSLR-like Bokeh effect. There is also a dual-tone LED flash at the back. The rear camera can record 4K videos @30fps. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel lens with f/2.0 aperture.

In terms of specifications, the Aquos S2 features a 5.5-inch display with 2048 x 1080 pixels resolution and has a screen-to-body ratio of up to 87.5 percent. There is a 2.5D curved glass on top which enhances the appeal of the smartphone and also protects against daily wear and tear. What also brings attention to the smartphone is its fingerprint sensor. Touted as the world’s narrowest fingerprint scanner, the sensor is located on the front and is just 3.6mm wide.

The Aquos S2 will be available in two variants: one with Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC under-the-hood, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, while the other will be powered by Snapdragon 630 SoC and paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Both variants will have a microSD card slot for further storage expansion.

The smartphone is further backed by a 3,020mAh non-removable battery that supports 5V/2A fast charging via the USB Type-C port. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Bluetooth, USB Type C port, Wi-Fi 802.11 and GPS support. On the software front, the Aquos S2 runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box.

Sharp Aquos S2 with bezel-less display, dual-camera setup launched in China: Specifications, features

The Aquos S2 was rumored to have an in-display fingerprint reader, but that appears to have been inaccurate. There's a fingerprint sensor below the screen in a bit of bezel that has remained on the phone. The 5.5-inch 1440p display reaches all the way up to the top of the chassis, save for a cut-out in the middle occupied by the front-facing camera. This is what gives the Aquos S2 the Essential Phone vibe. However, the corners of the Sharp phone are not rounded but cut off. It's a strange look, but it's probably cheaper and easier to do.

This phone looks fancy, but inside it's relatively modest. There are standard and premium versions of the phone. Both include a 3,020mAh battery, dual cameras, and the bezel-free design. The cheaper model has a Snapdragon 630 SoC, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The more expensive one includes a Snapdragon 660, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
