Shimla: Students in Himachal Pradesh travelling more than 5 km from their home to school daily are entitled to get a scholarship, the state government announced on Friday.
Officials said the aim of the scholarship is to check drop out rate in schools, particularly those that are located in far-off areas.
The cabinet had approved the "Protsahan Chhatravriti Yojna" (Student Scholarship Promotion Scheme) for all categories of students travelling a distance of over 5 km daily to attend government schools from their permanent residence, an official statement said here.
"Every student covering a distance of 5 to 8 km daily is entitled to get a scholarship of Rs.200 per month, while those travelling over 8 km will get Rs.300 per month," said the statement.
The scheme will benefit 22,500 students in the state.
Himachal Pradesh has over 15,000 primary and higher secondary government schools with a strength of around 10 lakh students. IANS
