Panasonic has revived the erstwhile consumer brand Sanyo only for the Indian market and will make it online exclusive in televisions and smartphones to take on the plethora of price-competitive online exclusive brands and prevent any deep discounting for its own products.
Two senior industry executives said the company has already started a pilot with televisions at Amazon India, but plans to take the Sanyo range across marketplaces.
Panasonic is targeting Sanyo to be amongst the top three television brands sold online with target to garner 10% volume share by this year itself. Next year, it will launch smartphones under Sanyo.
“The Sanyo brand still has a lot of brand recall in India and will operate in the value-for-money segment as an online exclusive. The company is assembling the Sanyo range in India and will do so for all other categories the brand will enter into,” said a senior industry executive aware of the plans.
When contacted, a Panasonic India spokesperson said the company has no comments to offer for the story. Panasonic India has formed a separate team to handle the Sanyo business.
Panasonic also plans to launch few online-exclusive models next year. “Panasonic wants to protect its own brand online by maintaining pricing parity with offline trade. The biggest benefit for Sanyo will be utilisation of the Panasonic service support, which other online exclusive brands may find difficult to build,” said one of the executives.
Globally, Panasonic acquired Sanyo in 2009-10 and since then the brand is primarily focused on industrial batteries and energy solutions targeted at commercial entities.
Panasonic has transferred the Sanyo TV business in the US to Funai Electric Co for annual royalty payments. Sanyo also had a joint venture with Indian firm BPL, which ended in 2007.
The Sanyo range will be the second product line revived by the company exclusively for India apart from Panasonic smartphones, which, too, the firm had exited globally.
“If Sanyo manages to perform as per expectation, it could also be expanded into appliances,” one of the executives said. India is one of the focused countries for Panasonic and was recently made the headquarters for South Asia, Middle East and Africa.
