VADODARA: The governance review committee of International Cricket Council (ICC) has got its first Gujarati member. Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bsecretary Sanjay Patel was appointed a member of ICC's governance review committee during the two-day ICC annual conference held from June 27 in Australia under the chairmanship of N Srinivasan.
Patel told TOI that he is the first Indian to be a part of the governance review committee. "It's an honour to be a part of this prestigious committee. I will try to work for the betterment of cricket in our country and better governance in world cricket," Patel said. A close confidant of Srinivasan, Patel was expected to assume bigger role in ICC ahead of the annual conference.
Patel was made BCCI secretary last year after the then secretary Sanjay Jagdale quit over the IPL spot fixing row involving Srinivasan's son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan. Patel stood strongly by Srinivasan who faced criticism from all quarters for not resigning as BCCI president. A chartered accountant by profession, Patel rose phenomenally in Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) and served in many capacities.
He held the post of BCA vice president, secretary and member of the managing committee for years. He got elected BCA secretary in December last year. However, he recently faced a setback after he was removed from the managing committee and secretary's post. The move came after a row over him and three other BCA members flouting rules to contest polls. Patel, who no longer holds any post in BCA, has approached the courts against the BCA managing committee's decision to remove him.
