Specialist sites say Korean tech manufacturer Samsung will release a smart watch on September 4.
Like Google Glass, the touted new watch is tipped to bring controls such as a power button and menu control to a wearable item – in Samsung’s case to the wristband.
Samsung officially is not confirming anything, however SamMobile, a website that monitors Samsung devices going to market, claims the new watch, called Galaxy Gear, will debut on September 4 when Samsung is due to release its Galaxy Note III at a so-called “unpacked event”.
SamMobile says the Galaxy Gear will act as a companion device to Samsung Galaxy smartphones, presumably in a similar way to how Sony’s SmartWatch operates as a companion to its smartphones, with email and text messages relayed from the phone to the watch, but with Samsung’s own take on the details.
Any release of a Samsung smartwatch ahead of Apple’s expected launch of the iPhone 5S on September 10 will be a fillip for Samsung, which could say that owning a Samsung handset offers a conduit to its new state-of-the-art watch.
The announcement is tipped to take place at the IFA Consumer Electronics Show to be held in Berlin next month.
