The Mega 5.8 and 6.3, launched in India
Samsung Electronics on Tuesday launched the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3, its biggest smartphones so far.
The company, which had first showcased a prototype in April, said the devices combine the portability and convenience of a smartphone with the power, multi-tasking capabilities and viewing experience of a tablet.
Two models of Samsung Galaxy Mega, with 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch screen sizes, are the latest addition to the Galaxy family, the company said, while launching the devices in India.
While the Mega 5.8 inches (qHD TFT Display screen) will be available in India within a week at Rs25,100 , the Mega 6.3 inches (HD Super Clear LCD screen) will be introduced in the market in mid-June at Rs31,490
Both the products run on the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean experience and feature dual core processor, internal storage (8GB in 5.8 and 16GB in 6.3) along with up to 64 GB of expandable memory to store apps, music, videos, photos and more, it said adding that the smartphones will also have longer battery lives.
“Consumers prefer the larger screen displays in their smartphones owing to the time they spend doing more with their devices,” Vineet Taneja, country head, Samsung Mobile and Digital Imaging Business (India), said.
The company, encouraged by the sales of Galaxy Note, which has a screen size of 5.5-inch, believes that in developing countries there is demand for oversized smartphones that can also double up as tablets.
That, perhaps, explains why it chose to launch the device in India ahead of markets such as the US and Europe.
