Samsung has introduced 128 gigabyte (GB), 3-bit NAND-based flashed storage based on Embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) 5.0 technology targeted at mid-market smartphones and tablets. The company has already introduced 128GB flash memory based onUniversal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 and eMMC 5.1standards for top-end and premium smartphones.  Mid-market smartphones will now be able to increase their storage capacity to 128GB as well with the new , says the company.

The new 128GB eMMC 5.0 would offer sequential data read speed of 260 MB/s, similar to MLC NAND-based eMMC 5.1 memory. It can handle random data read and write operations up to 6,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second), four times faster than external memory card and 5,000 IOPS, 10 times faster, respectively.

3-bit NAND storage was only used in SSDs for data centers, servers and PCs, now it has extended it to the entire mobile memory storage market with the 3-bit eMMC 5.0 line-up. The company says that it will continue to develop 3-bit NAND Flash memory offering higher-performance and in higher densities.
