Samsung codenames Galaxy Note 9 project ‘crown’

Samsung Electronics will soon start the development of its next Galaxy Note smartphone under the codename “crown,” according to news reports on Nov. 6. An official from a smartphone parts supplier was quoted by local news outlet The Bell as saying, “We will start providing components for a pilot production (of the Galaxy Note 9) in the first quarter next year.”

Samsung had called the pilot project for Galaxy Note 8 as “baikal,” one of the world’s biggest lakes in Russia, hinting at the large-sized display of the phablet, a portmanteau of phone and tablet. The codename of the next-generation Note model is said to allude to Samsung’s goal to tighten its grip on the large-sized smartphone sector.

As the model number suggests, this first Galaxy Note 9 benchmark happens to be of the US variant which will be powered by a Qualcomm chip. The benchmark reveals that the Galaxy Note 9 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, as expected, since it’s also powering the Galaxy S9/S9+. It can be said with absolute certainty that the international variants of this device will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9810 processor much like the existing flagship.

Is it odd that the Galaxy Note9 was spotted at Geekbench this early? It isn’t if the report of an accelerated time frame is true. And apparently, it’s Galaxy S9’s fault.

The launch of the second 2018 flagship may come as early as July or August, based on info that Samsung Display is pulling up the AMOLED production for the Note9 from June to April, says Korean publication The Investor.

This is partially because the Galaxy S9 isn’t selling as well as Samsung expected and also because the company wants to preempt the new iPhones.
