Sachin Tendulkar will be conferred with Bharat Ratna, according to a release on Saturday by the Prime Minister's Office.

The legendary cricketer who played his final innings in cricket today, at Wankehde, will be the first sportsperson to be honoured with the award. The decision comes after several noted personalities had voiced their support. Lata Mangeshkar was the latest to say that Tendulkar deserved Bharat Ratna. "Whatever he (Sachin) has done for the country, very few people can. He deserves the honour. He has made all of us proud," Lata had told television channels on Friday. She herself had received the honour in 2001.

Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award, conferred for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour. The honour has been conferred on 41 people till date. The living recipients include former president APJ Abdul Kalam (1997) and economist Amartya Sen (1999). The only foreign recipient of the award was Nelson Mandela (1990).

He is sure an outstanding sports person and sports person should be given the highest sports award and not something that is being to someone extraordinary people who has contributed to humanity and social work.

If really necessary then he could be given the award when he grows old but not now, and now being given we would need a much higher award created for people like Dr Kalam, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela and several others.

If sports people are given these awards then what to give to people who give employments for thousands of people? Business should be treated as Business and service to be treated as service.

Eg: The person who invents cancer drug is doing a service as opposed to the pharmacy person manufacturing millions of these drugs with patents for sales. Both of them are saving millions of valuable lives but one is doing a service by spending his entire life researching it and other who spends on manufacturing it.

Now the award has become a commercial one and a Joke.

Please be aware that, Bharat Ratna is NOT a award given only to people who contributed to humanity and social work... there are only very few awards in the entire world which is specifically given to such fields.

May i know what humanity/social work done by Indira Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi....

Also on what basis did people like M. G. Ramachandran, Satyajit Ray, M. S. Subbulakshmi, Ravi Shankar, Lata Mangeshkar & Bismillah Khan received the award.

Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award given to people who achieve/perform/contribute of highest order in any field, be it art/literature/sports/science/ploitics etc. If a actor/director/musician/singer can receive it why not a sports person, who make the country proud cant receive it.

It was never "in any field" and this was added just to add Sachin to this list. Before adding him we have at-least half a dozen of them from sports alone who deserves this. :) :)

Thanks for your comments friend, this is just my view and not against any single or a group, also this is much of a controversial discussion so its better i stop with this reply so we can use our valuable time in more useful discussions. Hope you don't mind. :tup :tup

yes, i agree with the fact that Sports was included in order to make Sachin eligible for the award.... also true that they are few other sports persons who deserve this and atleast now we can expect them to get it, govt. has paved way for them, by means of Sachin.

but you have safely ignored the second part of the quote and replied only to the first half.....
