VIJAYAWADA: With an objective to enhance the income of women's Self Help Groups (SHG), officials of the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) are working on a comprehensive socio-economic development scheme

As of now, the number of SHG women working under MEPMA across the State stands at about 19 lakh and the officials as part of the first phase of the scheme have decided to select 4 lakh women to extend all the required support for them to ensure increase in their income levels at least by
Rs 5,000 a month

Though loans have been sanctioned to women's groups for small-scale businesses, lack of professional and technical support as well as marketing facilities deprive them of expected income.
After engaging in businesses like making jute bags, imitation jewellery and tailoring, women earn between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 a month

Against such a backdrop, officials of MEPMA came out with the idea of a scheme for improving the income of women's groups. Speaking to Express, MEPMA State director P Chinnathataiah said that they are identifying select women and will complete the task by November 15

"After interacting with the select women, we will ask them what kind of support they need to improve their income levels further," he said. Financial support is crucial for the upgradation of their existing business, we are going to mobilise Rs 6,000 crore through banks and Stree Nidhi. The amount will be distributed to 4 lakh women for improving their business," he explained
