Last few days in India have been very chaotic following the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. To save themselves from being cash-strapped, people have been lining up outside banks and ATMs to exchange, deposit and withdraw money. With the government allowing people to exchange and withdraw only a certain amount of cash, people are facing serious shortage of cash. Unfortunately, this has led to long queues and long-waiting time in front of ATMs across India. Google has now come to rescue people with its new feature that lets you find the nearest ATM with just a Google search.
To begin with, all you have to do is go to Google’s homepage. Right below the search box, you will find a newly added feature called ‘Find an ATM near you’. Clicking on the link will direct you to Google Maps. The screen then automatically gets divided into two parts. The left hand side panel shows you the ATM name, address and working time of ATM (if available), while the right hand side of the screen shows you a map showing all ATMs present around your location. Clicking on the ATM name will open Google Maps, which will then show you more details about the ATM including direction, location and official website among others.
Please note that this feature is available on both desktop and mobile devices.
While Google is the easiest option people can use, there are a few more options that you might want to use to locate the nearest ATM.
Cashnocash
Quikr and Nasscom recently launched CashNoCash.com website, which helps users across India find the nearest ATM, bank or post-office to get insights on cash availability and waiting time for cash exchange or withdrawal. The crowd-sourced website aims to provide information in real time.
atmsearch.in
This is another website that came into limelight after Narendra Modi announced the currency ban. After providing information such as your location, the website shows you the bank name, location and the landmark. Moreover, the site also informs you about when the ATM was finally updated. It is also possible to update the status of ATMs by providing the landmark, bank name and the number of people waiting in the queue.
CMS
CMS has launched a web-application called CMS ATM Finder to help cash withdrawers find working ATMs around them. You will be directed to a page that lets you choose your State and City. On choosing your location using the dropdown list, it will help find a list of ATMs managed by CMS. The list shows ATMs that are up and running. At the right side, you get the option to notify CMS if a particular ATM is shut or out of cash. However the website only shows those ATMs which they have ties up with.
Walnut app
Walnut app’s ‘Find an #ATMwithCash’ has also become quite popular. It opens Google Maps within the interface and shows all nearby ATMs with or without cash. Walnut will track the transaction records on the phones (send via text messages by the bank after a withdrawal is made) of its 1.8 million users to figure out which ATM is functional and has cash, across India. After a user withdraws money, Walnut will ask them to fill in details about the length of the queue at the ATM they used. Based on their input, the app will highlight working ATMs that have long queues with a red pin and ATMs that have short queues with an orange pin. Non-functional ATMs will be represented by a grey pin on the map.
Paytm
Paytm, has been the savior of many people since the demonetization has been announced. The company has come out with some new features to help people ATMs near their location. Called ‘Nearby’, the feature helps users to see stores that accept Paytm as a payment option nearby. The ‘Add Cash’ feature points to the nearest ICICI and Axis bank branches, where one can get cash loaded onto their Paytm wallets.
