Roston Chase named in West Indies squad for India Tests

Shai Hope, the West Indies opening batsman, has been left out of the squad to face India in the four-match Test series. The 22-year-old Barbadian was a notable absentee, alongside veteran wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, in the 12-member squad announced by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) on Monday (July 11).

The selection committee led by new chairman, Courtney Browne, decided to reward 24-year-old Barbados batsman Roston Chase with an opportunity to earn his maiden international cap. Chase's inclusion comes in the wake of a strong domestic season in which he amassed 710 runs at an average of 59.16 and snared 23 wickets at 17.26 with his handy off spin.

Hope scored a breezy century playing for the West Indies Board President XI against the visiting Indian side in a two-day warm-up game in St. Kitts but was ignored in favour of the returning Leon Johnson, the 28-year-old Guyanese batsman, who earned his stripes after a consistent showing in the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional four-day tournament. With Hope's omission following the much-publicised Ramdin snub, 24-year-old Shane Dowrich remains the only specialist wicketkeeper in the squad.

The WICB selectors also decided to leave out the experienced pace duo of Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach following a string of inconsistent performances during the tour of Australia. With left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican failing to make the cut, the onus of leading the spin attack will fall squarely on Devendra Bishoo.

The first Test starts at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua from July 21.

Miguel Cummins added to West Indies squad

Miguel Cummins, the Barbados pacer, has been named in the 13-member West Indies squad that will face India in the first Test in Antigua, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced on Tuesday (July 12).The 25-year-old, who made his One-Day International debut against Ireland in 2014, has played only one international game. He was part of the West Indies Test squad that toured Australia in December last year, but did not get to play in the three-Test series.

Cummins, who has featured in 41 first-class games, has accumulated 116 wickets at an impressive average of 22.56. He last played a first-class match in March this year in the WICB professional cricket league regional four-day tournament, ending with 33 wickets from 10 games at an average of 20.69.

However, what comes as a surprise is the board's announcement of Cummins replacing Jerome Taylor, who retired from Test cricket, in the squad. Taylor, however, wasn't named in the squad for the first Test, and the selection panel went on to announce a 12-member team on July 11.

"The selection panel of the West Indies Cricket Board today named fast bowler Miguel Cummins as replacement for Jerome Taylor in the 13-member squad to face India in the upcoming first Test match against India," the WICB said in a release.

West Indies will take on India in a four-match Test series, starting from July 21.
