Andy Roddick crashed out in the first round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati at the hands of Germany's Phillipp Kohlschreiber.

Roddick took the first set 7-6(5) on tie-break before losing the next two 7-5 and 6-1 in a match that saw him warned for throwing his racket and being penalised a point for hitting the ball into the stands.

Viktor Troicki, the 14th seed, also fell after a two-set defeat to Italy's Fabio Fognini.

The Serbian player lost 6-4 6-1 as Fognini conceded just one break in the match.

Richard Gasquet, seeded 12th, had an easier time, defeating Alexander Dolgopolov 6-1 7-6(4).

Fernando Verdasco saw off Thomaz Bellucci 6-3 7-6(4), David Nalbandian edged Kei Nishikori 6-4 6-4 and Juan Monaco took a three-set match against Tommy Haas 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3.

Ryan Harrison and Grigor Dimitrov also progressed to the next round but their fellow wildcard Robby Ginepri was bundled out in two sets by wild card Alex Bogomolov.

In the women's draw no seeds fell, with ninth seed Andrea Petkovic, 14th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and 15th seed Ana Ivanovic all booking their second-round spots.

Wildcards Christina McHale made it past Tsvetana Pironkova and there were also wins for qualifiers Chanelle Scheepers and Jie Zheng.

Lucie Safaraova, Sara Errani, Shabar Peer and Sofia Arvidsson all won their own first-round clashes.
