Reliance Jio, the mobile network operator in India, will soon launch set-up boxes (STBs) that will be powered by Android. They will provide users with consistent experience with JioFiber’s 1 GBPS connection.
However, the service will be available only to enterprises at the start. It has also been announced that there will be two more models of STB, in addition to those imported earlier with the model number MCM3100, by the time the service is launched. Among the two high-end STBs, one will be powered with Broadcom chipset and the other one with Marvell processor. Both STB models support 4K UHD by default and are run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.
However, this will work only if the user has a 4K TV to watch 4K content. Normal LCD/LED TV can become a Smart TV running on Android with those STBs. PlayStore, alongside native Android apps and the Jio Suite apps like Jio TV and Jio On Demand, are pre-installed on the device. The Broadcom powered by STB comes with dual core Brahma CPU and OGLES 3.1 GPU.
The device is not equipped with IR remote controller but with Bluetooth remote controllers and can also be controlled with smartphones using the app. Furthermore, the remote controller has a mic for voice search and supplied with a LAN, USB and HDMI ports, as well as built-in Wi-Fi support. It runs on years old Android 4.4 Kitkat and supports only a maximum of Full HD resolution. It is to be noted that the Jio set top boxes will have better specifications and will also has the Jio suite apps which are exclusive to just Jio users.
