Reliance Jio is all set to commercially launch its 4G services in a few cities in the next 10-15 days. At least that is what a new report citing Jio’s employees claims. This report is in stark contrast to a recent research note claiming that Mukesh Ambani-owned company had deferred the commercial launch to the end of this year . According to RTN-Asia ‘s sources, Jio will start the roll out in Mumbai, followed by the likes of Delhi, Kolkata and Kerala to name a few. Another report however claims that Jio could first do a soft launch as early as this week, followed by a wider roll out.

BGR India reached out to Reliance Jio and a spokesperson replied, “For providing superior customer experience, Jio is currently testing its service offerings across the breadth of the country with group employees, partners and vendors who are among the first to test the true 4G network.”

According to Business Line , Jio has reportedly shipped 4G SIM cards and Customers Application Forms (CAFs) to its outlets across the country. These include Reliance Digital, Reliance Digital Express, Reliance Digital Express Mini, as well as independent channel partners.

This is set to be a limited release, and only a few customers will be able to test the 4G services ahead of the wider commercial launch. The report says, “the SIMs can be activated within four hours of a user submitting the CAFs, and on activation of the SIM, a customer can start using 4G services.” Towards the end of last year, Reliance Jio had done a similar soft launch of its 4G services, but it was limited to the company’s employees and their families .

The report also claims that VoLTE services won’t be rolled out just yet, which was expected to be one of the highlights of Jio’s 4G network. Instead, the company is expected to use BSNL and RCom’s networks for its voice services. Reliance Jio has already signed intra-circle roaming (ICR) agreements with BSNL and RCom.

There’s been a lot of speculation around when Reliance Jio will finally launch its 4G services in India. The company got pan-India 4G license for 2300MHz band back in 2010, but since then has been facing numerous delays. It currently boasts over 100,000 LTE base stations in India, which covers over 100,000 villages and 18,000 towns and cities.

In the run up to the launch, Reliance Digital has launched 4G-enabled smartphones with VoLTE and VoWiFi support under its LYF brand. Jio, on the other hand, has started rolling out pan-India digital services and is also building apps for cloud storage, music and video streaming ahead of the 4G launch. It has also set up public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country and is providing free Wi-Fi at numerous ICC World Cup T20 stadiums.
