Reliance Jio launches voice messaging and video calling app, Jio Chat; readying other digital products

Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio has launched its first product-- a mobile messaging app with voice and video calling features called Jio Chat. The company is now available on Android and iOS operating systems. It comes with a number of features including instant messaging, voice & video calling, one-to-one & group chats, conference calling, stickers and would also feature updates and offers from the user's favourite brands. Jio Chat features Jio Chat Channels, that brands and most probably celebrities will be able to use to connect with users. The feature is similar to Japanese OTT app LINE. As per other media reports, Reliance Jio is expected to launch a number digital services, including Music streaming service Jio Beats, Live TV & catch-up TV service Jio Play, Video on demand service Jio On-demand and a friends locator app Jio Friends. In addition, the company would also bring an online newspaper service Jio News that claims to allow users read hundreds of traditional newspapers across different languages and editions. It will also bring online magazine service Jio Mags. Reliance Jio Infocomm is set to give a tough competition in the 4G space with its investment of about Rs 70, 000 crore, pan-India licence with operations in both 2300 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum band and around 30,000 towers of its own. It's expected to deploy its services in the initial months of 2015 across 800 cities. Reliance Jio has been setting up a complete ecosystem by collaborating and building partnerships with various telecom infrastructure providers to gear up for its massive roll out of 4G services across 800 cities in 2015. Jio recently soft launched its LTE service in Gujarat at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show where it helped people connect to Wi-Fi service with over 10 Mbps speed. Additionally, it also launched 4Genabled Wifi service in Kolkata.

MUMBAI: Reliance Jio Infocomm, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), has launched its first service in the form of messenger app Jio Chat as part of its larger rollout plan for 4G service.

Jio Chat, which is completely free and ad free, has features like instant messaging, free SMS, voice and video calling. The free SMS has been capped at 100 per month.

The app, which is available on both Android and iOS platforms, allows users to chat in groups, enjoy the text features like stickers, emoticons, doodles, media share, location share, and more.

It also offers the latest news, updates, and special promotions through Jio Chat Channels for which it has tied up with brands like HTC, Hotstar, Paytm, Reliance Digital, and Mumbai Indians, which is owned by RIL. Users can send free SMS invites to friends to join Jio Chat. The app automatically syncs contacts.

While the app offers location and status sharing, users can simply turn the feature off if they want to ensure privacy. It also stores messages when the connection is interrupted and forwards them once the person is back online. Jio Chat will compete with other messaging and calling apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, and Line Messenger.

WhatsApp, which is the big daddy with 80 million users, has in recent times enriched its offering by adding new features like audio recording and voice call options.

Reliance's Jio Chat reaches to 9 countries

NEW DELHI: Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio's instant messaging app Jio Chat is now available across nine countries, including the US, UK, China and Singapore, besides India, a company source told ET.

The IM app has already crossed 2 million subscribers in India and has voice, video and conference call capabilities and competes with Skype, WhatsApp, WeChat, Viber, Line and Bharti-promoted Hike Messenger.

Jio Chat has now become available in Canada, United States of America ( USA), United Kingdom (UK), United Arab Emirates (UAE), China, South Africa, Singapore and Australia, a Jio spokesperson said.

"The company is excited to launch our services in eight new countries as it will help in boosting our international presence and will also let our customers based in India connect seamlessly with their loved ones abroad," the person added.

The chat app offers HD quality video and can be seamlessly integrated with other Reliance Jio applications and works on Android OS version 2.3 and above, and on Apple smartphones with an iOS version 6.0 and above.

Reliance Jio is also creating special promotional campaigns to engage and educate customers about the innovation-driven chat offering.

The oil to telecom business giant is is currently working aggressively on its ambitious fourth-generation (4G) rollout and is banking on a gamut of app-based services, including mobile wallet Jio Money and entertainment content.

Reliance Jio has 2300MHz spectrum across the country and 800MHz or 1800MHz or both in 20 out of total 22 circles.
