Nearly 16 million new users were added to Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio Infocomm's network in September, far ahead of market leader Bharti Airtel which added 2.4 million subscribers in the same period, the telecom regulator said in a report on Friday.
Jio launched its telecom operations on September 5 and offered free voice and data services its for users till December 31, 2016, in a bid to capture the market. This free offer has been recently further extended to March 31, 2017, and has helped Jio notch up 58 million subscribers overall at last count.
In September, Vodafone India added 525,281 users while Idea gained 1.91 million, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said.
Bharti Airtel is No 1 player in India with market share of 24.76% against 25.03% last month by user base, followed by Vodafone at 19.12% and Idea at 17.03%. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. had 8.93% share of the market, the dominant one among PSUs – MTNL has only 0.34% share among an over billion phone users.
The report also pointed out that Tata Teleservices lost over a million subscribers in September.
According to the Trai report, total wireless subscriber base increased from 1,028.88 million at the end of August 2016 to 1,049.74 million at the end of September 2016, registering a monthly growth rate of 2.03%.
The wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 585.89 million at the end of August to 603.80 million at the end of September 2016, while that in rural areas also increased from 442.99 million to 445.94 million during the same period, with monthly growth rates of urban and rural wireless subscription at 3.06% and 0.67% respectively.
Delhi/NCR region recorded the highest teledensity of 226.94 whereas the lowest was recorded in Bihar at 55.52. Jammu & Kashmir service area showed maximum decline in wireless subscribers while Haryana recorded highest growth rate.
In northern and western India, the highest requests for mobile number portability has been received in Rajasthan followed by Gujarat, while in southern and eastern India, it has been received in Karnataka followed by Andhra Pradesh.
Wireline subscriber base declined from 24.51 million from the end of August 2016 to 24.49 million by the end of September 2016. BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, held 70.84% of the market share. Bharti Airtel saw the highest additions in the subscriptions in the wireline market share.
Net decline in the wireline subscriber base was 0.02 million with a monthly decline rate of 0.07%. The shares of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers were 83.99% and 16.01% respectively at the end of September 2016.
The number of broadband subscribers increased from 171.71 million at the end of August 2016 to 192.30 million at the end of September 2016 with a monthly growth rate of 11.99%
Bharti Airtel leads among the wireless broadband service providers with 46.19 million subscribers followed by Vodafone and Idea Cellular. BSNL holds the highest market share in the wired broadband service provider base with 9.88 million susbcribers.
However, overall wired and wireless broadband service share at the end of September was highest for Bharti Airtel at 24.02% followed by Vodafone and Idea.
The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,053.40 million at the end of August 2016 to 1,074.24 million in September, a monthly growth rate of 1.98%.
The wireless teledensity in India increased from 80.62 at the end of August 2016 to 82.17 at the end of September 2016. The share of urban and rural wireless subscribers in total number of wireless subscribers was 57.52% and 48.48% respectively at the end of September 2016.
