Reliance Jio has long been gearing up to launch its 4G LTE services in India, and speculations are rife as to when they will be finally rolled out. The latest reports suggest that Jio could be rolling out its 4G services as early as this week, and alleged tariff plans have surfaced online.
Experts have time and again said that Jio’s entry into the 4G space, is bound to disrupt the market . With that in mind, let’s quickly compare the leaked plans with Jio’s rivals like Vodafone and Airtel .
According to reports, Jio will be offering up to 75GB of data for as low as Rs 200. It is also said to be offering low-cost voice plans for around Rs 35 and family plans priced around Rs 37.
Vodafone and Airtel both are offering 4G data at 3G plan rates, though Airtel also has dedicated 4G plans as well. Both Vodafone and Airtel have a maximum of 20GB data available for postpaid users, which are priced at Rs 2,499 and Rs 3,000 respectively. Both these plans are valid for a period of one month.
Jio is also expected to offer Mi-Fi devices to users with relatively low cost plans. Reports say that Jio’s 40GB data plans are expected to be priced between Rs 700 and Rs 800 and will be valid for three months. Jio is expected to offer plans for up to 200GB data.
Airtel too offers Mi-Fi devices with data plan rates starting from Rs 450 onwards.
Again the maximum data plan on offer is for 10GB, priced at Rs 1,500 and valid for a month. Vodafone too offers 4G-enabled Mi-Fi devices with plans up to 20GB, priced at Rs 2,499.
Reliance Jio is now expected to commercially launch its services in the next 10-15 days. It owns pan-India 4G license for 2300MHz band, and currently boasts over 100,000 LTE base stations in India, which covers over 100,000 villages and 18,000 towns and cities.
Jio however isn’t expected to roll out VoLTE services just yet, which was supposed to the service’s highlight. Instead, the company is expected to use BSNL and RCom’s networks for its voice services. Reliance Jio has already signed intra-circle roaming (ICR) agreements with BSNL and RCom.
In the run up to the launch, Reliance Digital has launched 4G-enabled smartphones with VoLTE and VoWiFi support under its LYF brand. Jio, on the other hand, has started rolling out pan-India digital services and is also building apps for cloud storage, music and video streaming ahead of the 4G launch. It has also set up public Wi-Fi hotspots across the country and is providing free Wi-Fi at numerous ICC World Cup T20 stadiums.
