Azhar: Ravi Shastri shown a womaniser, angry with makers of the film
Emraan Hashmi's Azhar has left former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri red-faced.
Emraan Hashmi's Azhar seems to have rubbed many people the wrong way. The Tony D'Souza-directed biopic of former Indian cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin has now irked Ravi Shastri too. Reason? The way Shastri has been portrayed in Azhar.
In Azhar, Ravi Shastri is played by Gautam Gulati. While the film doesn't address any of Azharuddin's teammates by their full names - only the first names are used - the film leaves little to imagination in the fact that the first names of the cricketers are kept intact. So inside the Indian Cricket Team greenroom, apart from Azhar we have a certain Ravi, Navjot, Manoj, Kapil, etc.
Anyone who is even remotely aware of the general Cricket scene in India back when Azharuddin played for the country, would know that the cricketers referred to in Azhar are Ravi Shastri, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Manoj Prabhakar and Kapil Dev.
Gautam Gulati plays Ravi in the film, and his character is shown to be an out-and-out womaniser. Ravi even cheats on his wife during a tour where she accompanies him. This has led to Shastri being thoroughly infuriated, says a report in the Times of India.
Ravi Shastri has apparently even expressed his concerns to the cricket authorities. Not just Shastri himself, his family too is pretty flabbergasted at his portrayal in the film.
Earlier, Manoj Prabhakar had threatened to take legal action against the makers of the film. Azharuddin's former wife Sangeeta Bijlani too wasn't very happy with the way her character was shown in the film.
Ravi Shastri's portrayal in Azhar is said to stem from Azharuddin's issues with Shastri. The sting operation that had led to Azhar being charged with match-fixing allegations had Ravi Shastri saying several things. If sources are to be believed, says the daily, this is Azhar's way of getting back at Shastri.
