Rangana Herath announces ODI, T20I retirement
Rangana Herath, Sri Lanka's veteran spinner, announced his retirement from limited-overs cricket on Sunday (April 17), with a view to extend his Test career. A long-time injury to both his knees had forced him to opt out of several limited-overs series in the last couple of years.
"In the next eight months or so, we're scheduled to play something like 12 Test matches. I think retiring from the shorter formats is the right move, because that will allow young players to be groomed for the next World Cup, as well as lowering my workload and letting me concentrate on Tests," Herath was quoted as saying by Sri Lanka Cricket's (SLC) official media release.
The 38-year-old played 71 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 17 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), bagging 74 and 18 wickets respectively. His best effort in limited-overs came against New Zealand in a must-win encounter during the successful 2014 World T20 campaign, where he bagged 5 for 3 while defending a total of 120.
The SLC acknowledged Herath's immense value to the national side and wished him well for his future. "Sri Lanka Cricket wishes Herath nothing but the best as he continues to play cricket in his chosen discipline, and in all future endeavours.
"Herath has been an integral part of the Sri Lanka bowling arsenal where his brilliant accuracy and subtle variation in pace and flight made him a force to reckon with both at home and away," the release stated.
