Chris Gayle's controversial remarks in an interview he gave to a female journalist in a British newspaper (The Times) has led to the Melbourne Renegades announcing that they will not offer him a fresh contract for next season's Big Bash League (BBL).

Gayle also faces a possible censure from English county club Somerset, for whom he's slated to play soon. The Jamaican's latest antics may have just put him in serious trouble in the IPL too.

Gayle had told the journalist he has "a very, very big bat, the biggest in the wooooorld. You think you could lift it? You'd need two hands." Under fire since then, the 36-year-old later defended himself by saying that the comments were made in jest and he was having a bit of fun.

Taking cognizance of the whole issue, Rajiv Shukla, the IPL chairman, told TOI on Tuesday (May 24): "The players must behave themselves. We expect the players to adhere to a certain kind of behaviour when the tournament is on. The players should maintain the sanctity of the league. These kind of statements are totally uncalled for in public domain. I will take up this issue with the president and the secretary of the BCCI."

Shukla also said he would take up the matter with the Royal Challengers Bangalore management. Gayle has played for Royal Challengers in the IPL since 2011.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), though, is trying to distance itself from the issue, and may only act if a complaint is lodged against the West Indian star.

"At this point, we'll not look into it. We're focused on completing the IPL, which has reached its final stages. What has happened in this case is between two foreign individuals. It is a personal matter between people who aren't from India. At the same time, that doesn't mean that we'll ignore it. If a complaint is brought to us, we'll act on it. If it develops into something more, we'll look into it at an appropriate stage," Ajay Shirke, secretary of BCCI, said.

The Jamaican had courted similar controversy earlier in the year during his infamous don't blush baby interview with Australian reporter Mel McLaughlin during last season's BBL.
