Ministry of Railways has announced the implementation of Aadhar based ticketing for senior citizens. For booking tickets over both – counter and internet, the Aadhaar number of the senior citizen could be interlinked. The linking of UID would remain voluntary till March 31. From April 1, the Aadhaar based booking would be mandatory for senior citizens to avail concessions. The senior citizens would also need to carry the original copy of Aadhaar during the train journey for verification purpose.

“With effect from 1st April 2017, during journey senior citizen passengers shall carry any of the original documents including Aadhaar Card as notified from time to time for the purpose of identity proof,” Ministry of Railways said in the press release. It further confirmed that Aadhaar based ticketing would not be compulsory till March 31. “From 1st January, 2017 to 31st March, 2017 requirement of Aadhaar verification for getting concessional tickets for senior citizens shall be on voluntary basis.”

“There shall be no change in procedure as regards concession to senior citizen in unreserved ticketing,” Ministry of Railways clarified.

The Aadhaar-based booking for concession would turn mandatory from April 1, 2017.
The rationale behind this scheme is that it will prevent crooked railway agents from purchasing tickets under senior citizen category at lower rates, and selling them at higher amount in black.
