In a bid to reduce cash transactions, government departments in Puducherry will make payments using e-wallet system, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi said on Wednesday. “There will be no transaction in cash as the bank cash should be available to the common man who did not have credit cards or e-banking facilities,” she told reporters.

“Puducherry government will hereafter make payments for its transactions only through ‘e-wallet’ system and not through cash,” she said.

Transactions between government and business and vice versa will be only on the basis of e-wallet and digital banking system, Bedi added.

“The government will adopt the system so as to bring down the cash transaction,” she said on the sidelines of a function at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research in Puducherry.

The Lt Governor said, in a joint meeting with the Chief Secretary and other officials and department heads earlier, it was decided that payments by government departments should be only through banks and bank cards and not in cash.

Payments to contractors of Public Works and Department and other departments running to several crores of rupees here will also be made through banks, Bedi said.

Government staff should now use their cards or get the Rupay card from banks, she said adding the volunteers of NCC, NSS, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Self-Help groups, anganwadi staff and others would be roped in to create awareness on the use of plastic cards for carrying out financial transactions.

Earlier, Bedi inaugurated a Rs six-crore OPD Haemodialysis centre at JIPMER.
