Nic Pothas, the former South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman, has been confirmed as Sri Lanka's fielding coach and will join the team on August 8, said a board release on Friday (July 29).
Pothas, 42, scored 11,438 runs and has 659 dismissals to his name in 218 first-class games. He was recommended for the role by the SLC cricket committee, headed by Aravinda de Silva.
After Pothas retired from first-class cricket in 2011 with the highest average of any wicketkeeper for Hampshire, he served as the director of cricket at Guernsey and more recently as the academy director at Leicestershire County.
"We always believe in engaging the best professional advice and technical support for our national team, and this appointment is one such positive step,” said Thilanga Sumathipala, the president of Sri Lanka Cricket.
In the recent tour to England, Sri Lanka dropped as many as 20 catches, forcing the board to take remedial measures.
"Our last few outings are showing a marked improvement in the batting and bowling, however, our fielding has been letting us down," explained Sumathipala. "Pothas joining the support team already in place will give the necessary boost to this important area. We are grateful to Leicestershire Country for agreeing to release Nic Pothus."
Pothas, for his part, said he was “honoured and excited to take on the new challenge”.

Sri Lanka are currently hosting Australia for three Tests, five One-Day Internationals and two T20 Internationals. Pothas should join the squad ahead of the third Test, which starts on August 13.
