Host's PNG have won both of their matches comfortably on day 1 of the Pepsi ICC East-Asia Pacific Division 1 with a 38 run victory over Vanuatu and a 77 run crushing of Samoa.
In other matches Samoa snuck home against Fiji with one ball to spare in easily the match of the day and then Fiji bounced back in the afternoon with a 74 run win over Japan.
In the morning match on Amini Park PNG got off to a flyer against Vanuatu through some powerful stroke play from both Tony Ura and Assad Vala.
The pair were cruising towards a mammoth total at 0-82 off 8.5 overs before Vala was caught behind off Jelany Chila for 31. Ura continued to punish the Vanuatu attack until he was finally dismissed for a man of the match 73 from just 55 balls.
"I am really happy with how I batted today," said Ura. "Although it was disappointing to get out before the innings ended."
After the dismissal of Ura, Patrick Matautaava bowled Vanuatu back into the game with a blistering spell that even impressed some of the locals in attendance. Matautaava ended with figures of 3-18.
In reply despite never really being in the hunt for victory after the early dismissals of Andrew Mansale and Lenica Natapei Vanuatu showed real character in their chase to eventually fall just 38 runs short.
Edy Mansale with 30 runs was the best of the batsman for the visitors.
On Colts Cricket Ground Fiji posted a competitive total of 8-125 from their 20 overs against Samoa thanks to 33 runs from their captain Jo Rika. It was a good recovery from Fiji who were struggling early at 3-16.
In reply Samoa were cruising at 1-89 before losing 5 wickets for just 7 runs including Ben Mailata for 52 putting enormous pressure on their tail to hang onto what should have been an easy win.
In the end Winton Mariner and Lautala Fuimaono steadied the ship and crawled over the line with just one ball to spare. For Fiji Iniasi Cakacaka was his usual brilliant self with figures of 3-18 almost single handedly bowling his side to victory.
"It's always good to get a win to start a tournament," said Mailata. "We certainly did it the hard way but it was still a great result."
In the afternoon 45 from Kitione Tavo and 33 from Iniasi Cakacaka inspired Fiji to a comfortable 74 run win over Japan.
Chasing 160 Japan struggled to make many inroads into the Fiji total and eventually batted out their 20 overs to finish with 7-86.
In the final match on Colts Cricket Ground PNG sent Samoa crashing back to earth ending their 7 match undefeated run in EAP events with a dominant 77 run win.
Tony Ura was again the destroyer for PNG with 69 off 37 balls to set up a score of 6-182 from their 20 overs.
In reply Samoa lost Geoff Clarke and Ben Mailata cheaply to some tight PNG bowling which made an already difficult task virtually impossible for the visitors.
Uala Kaisara tried hard with 29 not out for Samoa whilst for PNG Jason Kila, Mahuru Dai and Willie Gavera claimed 2 wickets each.
Mahuru Dai who took 2 wickets was impressed by his opposition despite the ease of PNG’s two victories.
"Last time I saw Samoa and Vanuatu play they weren't too strong," said Dai. "But now that they are here in PNG after seeing them again I have noticed great improvement in both of them."
Tomorrow matches will begin at 10am local time.
