Messaging app WhatsApp has been playing host to a bunch of fake messages asking users to click on a link to avail free 4G unlimited data and voice calls.

The latest addition to this is a ‘BSNL 4G ExPress SIM Launched’ message which comes with a link to malicious websites, which can be potentially used to get your personal details.

The spam message reads, “With every 4G ExPress SIM you get unlimited data and calls for 1 year, with additional freebies. BSNL 4G ExPress SIM features: Unlimited 4G Internet, unlimited calls, unlimited SMS, 4G internet speed upto 10 Mbps and free SIM card. Get your FREE BSNL 4G ExPress SIM Card Today. Offer is valid till 31st Dec, 2016. Register Now : Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited"

Even though the message features a similar link to the telco’s website, on clicking the link, it redirects the user to fake websites which ask for personal details.

The hackers are using the ongoing price war between telcos as a medium to fulfil their objectives, thereby making users exposed to cyber threats and frauds. More such messages are expected to circulate and it is advised not to click on any links without confirming the authenticity of the message.

Recently, a message asking users to follow a link to avail Airtel ’s unlimited 4G data offer was doing rounds on WhatsApp, turned out to be a fake and likely aimed to corrupt subscribers.
