NEW DELHI: Mobile commerce firm Paytm has thrown its hat in the ring for the title sponsorship rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in case Pepsi pulls out, sources told TOI.

When contacted, Paytm founder and chairman Vijay Sekhar Sharma declined to comment on the matter. Paytm recently bagged a Rs 203-crore deal as BCCI's title sponsor for a period of four years. Paytm has these rights for India's domestic and international cricket matches at home.

Shashank Manohar, who has taken over the post of president at BCCI, is expected to discuss the matter in the upcoming working committee meeting on 18 October.

"Paytm's interest in IPL is a natural extension. More clarity will emerge after the working committee meeting," the source said.

Paytm, which recently got $500 million in fresh funding from Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, has allocated millions of dollars for marketing and brand promotion exercise in the country. Sharma has been vocal about loosening the purse strings to sponsor Indian sporting events.
