Just days before Chinese manufacturer Vivo
launches world's slimmest phone X5Max in
India, Oppo has announced that its R5
smartphone will be launched this month at a
price between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000.
The R5 has a thickness of 4.85mm, which
makes it the second slimmest phone behind
the X5Max that measures at 4.75mm.
While both the devices are powered by
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 processor, the
X5Max has a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen while
the R5 has a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen.
One advantage that the X5Max has over the
R5 is that it somehow manages to retain the
3.5mm jack for headphones while the Oppo
phone has to route the audio through the
micro USB port.
While thin phones are obviously the flavour of
the season - Apple, for example love to talk
about the latest iPhone's 6.9mm thickness -
these frame of these phones are also
susceptible to bending in pocket under
pressure.
Oppo, however, says that it has taken special
precaution to make sure that the R5 frame is
rigid and can withstand pressure.
The company says that the R5 uses "higher-
strength stainless steel in place of the
commonly used aluminum alloy to make its
unique micro-arc frame".
"The process used to create a more rugged
and durable frame lets this ultra-thin phone
'say no to bending' and overcomes the
weakness generally found in ultra-thin phones,"
the company said. "Now consumers can slip
the phone into their pockets and sit at ease
without fear of it being bent."
The R5 has 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage,
FullHD screen, 13-megapixel rear camera and
5-megapixel front camera. The device is
powered by Android KitKat, customised with
Oppo's Colour OS user interface.
