After the launch of women-friendly initiatives like ‘Pink Patrol ’ and ‘Pink Shadow’, Kochi city police will soon launch SOS (an international code signal of extreme distress) mobile application for the safety of women.
According to police, the smartphone application would be of great help to women as it is equipped with a button which will alert the police and an immediate relative in case of an emergency.
Kochi city DCP Arul R B Krishna said that the app, which was yet to be christened, was designed by an IT startup free of cost.
“After downloading the app, the user will have to register by giving basic details such as name, address, age, contact number and phone number of an immediate relative. The app will have an alert button which can be pressed when the user requires help or feels that she is in trouble. The app will automatically record sounds for the next 30 seconds and send the same to the police. It also sends alerts to the police control room as well as to the alternative contact number,” said Krishna.
Police can identify the user by accessing her details from the software of the app. They will be able to contact the user and send a team for the woman’s assistance.
“Police will also be able to trace the exact location of the user if GPS service is activated in the mobile. The app will be launched for
Android platforms. It will be introduced later in
iOS version,” said the officer.
He added that the app was ready for release and police were planning a grant launch event in which the new Pink Patrol team of Kochi city police would also be introduced.
Pink Patrol, an exclusive control room vehicle service for women, is ready to start its service in Kochi.
The control room vehicle will be completely managed by women officers who have undergone training.
