Who needs proprietary chargers when you could soon charge your smartphone with lightning?

Nokia and the University of Southampton this weekend posted online a proof-of-concept research of using lightning to charge a Lumia smartphone.

In a video posted on YouTube, Nokia said the research "could potentially see consumers tap one of nature's significant energy sources to charge their devices in a sustainable manner."

Nokia also said the research involving a Nokia Lumia 925 smartphone showed the "high quality and durability" of its devices.

The research also showed its continuing research to increase the already reliability of its products, it added.

But an article on PC World warned the researcher, where an artificial high-voltage arc was created to demonstrate how a smartphone could be charged by lightning, is not quite ready for consumers today.

"(M)aybe one day we’ll be able to hook a metal wire to the top of our houses and instantly charge our (Microsoft) Lumia phones? Why? Because it’s awesome, that’s why," it said.
