Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TATA Power-DDL) has become the first Indian power utility to deploy tele-protection services over its entire network following a deal with Nokia, the two companies announced on Thursday.
The enhanced system will allow Tata Power-DDL to receive nearly instant updates of any fault in its infrastructure and reroute power through alternative lines to minimise the disruption to the end consumer. “The system connects all our grid stations and ensures there is tele-protection and in case there is a fault, then it can be addressed immediately,” Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD at Tata Power-DDL, told reporters. “The consumer should never have to purchase digisets or inverters.”
Mr. Sinha said the company hopes to roll out smart meters in a year, which would help the consumer by providing them with disaggregated consumption data to gauge which parts of the day see higher consumption, among other uses.
The development of utility-specific features for IP/MPLS networks has “enabled us to deliver a resilient, secure and highly efficient network” and lays the foundation for future smart grid applications, Sanjay Malik, head of India Market, Nokia said.
Apart from the network upgradation, Nokia’s system also provides more traditional business applications such as customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and video surveillance systems.
Tata Power-DDL is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi, with Tata Power owning 51% of the stake. Tata Power-DDL distributes electricity in the North and North-West sections of Delhi, serving about seven million people.
