Nokia has long been rumored to make its much-awaited comeback to the smartphone space with three new Android devices. While we already have a fair idea about these devices, there is yet another confirmation of two Nokia smartphones in the work. However, the current source of information comes from a senior Microsoft executive and not some leakster. He has also revealed that these smartphones will be launched sometime in early Q2 2017.
“HMD Global (the owner of Nokia commercial rights for 10 years) planned to launch two new phone products in the fourth quarter 2016 and at least two smartphones in the early second quarter 2017,” CEO of mobile device commodities at Microsoft, Asia Pacific, James Rutherfoord was quoted in a Vietnamese publication. Earlier this week, Nokia has also confirmed its presence at MWC 2017 where the company president and CEO Rajeev Suri will be addressing the keynote. While the company’s presence at MWC 2017 does not guarantee any smartphone announcement, one cannot complexly rule out the chances. The technology trade fair is set to take place between February 27 and March 2 next year.
Talking about Nokia Android smartphones, recent leaks hinted at two high-end devices – one featuring a 5.2-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) display, whereas the other sporting a slightly larger 5.5-inch QHD display. In terms of hardware, both smartphones could be powered by Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 820 quad-core processors. In the camera department, both smartphones could come pack a 22.6-megapixel rear snapper with LED flash and 4K video recording capabilities. While the smartphones are likely to support connectivity options such as 4G LTE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11ac, other details such as battery capacity, selfie camera resolution, onboard storage and amount of RAM are currently unknown. With rumored prices starting at Rs 30,000, these smartphones could run Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
Recently, a Nokia D1C tablet with 13.8-inch full HD display and Android 7.0 Nougat was spotted running on Geekbench, GFXBench and AnTuTu benchmark listings. It had logged a peak score of 667 in single-core test and 3,229 in multi-core tests on Geekbench. The listings have also revealed some of the key specifications and features of the smartphone. The tablet was spotted running on Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor (eight Cortex A53 cores) clocked at 1.4GHz. It is paired with 3GB of RAM and Adreno 505 GPU. With 16GB of onboard storage (9GB user available), there is no word on whether or not it will be expandable.
For shutterbugs, the Nokia D1C tablet could sport a 15-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 7-megapixel front-facing sensor for selfies and video calling. While Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity options are expected on the tablet, leaks haven’t pointed at other details such as design, battery capacity, 4G connectivity. Looking at the specifications, the tablet is likely to carry a mid-range price tag.
There was one more smartphone called Nokia C1 that was rumored last year. The render offered a glimpse at super thin bezels, curved edges and unibody construction, but after that nothing was heard about the smartphone. The leak also hinted at the Nokia C1 sporting a 5-inch HD (720p) display, Intel Atom chipset and 2GB of RAM. However, as Intel is no longer making smartphone chipsets, it goes out of question. If at all Nokia plans to release this smartphone, it may have to go with MediaTek or Qualcomm chipset. With 32GB onboard storage, and 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel selfie unit was also rumored. The report had also hinted that the Nokia C1 could carry a price tag of around Rs 20,000, but looking at its specifications and current offerings by competitors, that price tag could be too high.
Nokia has already given commercial rights to HMD Global for manufacturing Nokia smartphones and tablets. It’s a 10-year licensing deal worth $350 million, which also covers brand and intellectual property rights. For every product sold under Nokia brand, HMD will be paying royalty to Nokia. Indeed, everyone is patiently waiting for Nokia’s comeback. After all these years, loyal Nokia fans could finally get what they deserve – a Nokia smartphone running Android.
